Major cities in Baja are not far from each other, with the longest distance being less than 400 Km. (aprox. 250 miles); that’s why there are no commercial interstate flights, but connections between cities are possible in private aircrafts.

There are several auto rental international companies settled in Baja as well as local companies offering new vehicles in excellent conditions which can be delivered at airports or at their offices with daily and weekly rates available.

There are several bus companies providing connections between the cities in the state.

Any driver must have Mexican auto insurance, this is strongly recommended, U.S. auto insurance is not valid anywhere in Mexico . Inexpensive Mexican insurance can be purchased for a day, week or month at numerous locations before crossing the border on both countries. You need a copy of your current vehicle registration and a valid driver's license. Getting Mexican insurance is quick and easy, some of these places have drive-through windows.

A number of San Diego rental car agencies also rent vehicles for Baja California and provide Mexican insurance.

In case of an accident, having this insurance will avoid detention.

Public Transit

Ask your hotel staff or at any visitor information center for directions and bus routes available to and from your destination.

There are two means of public transportation for tourists in Baja California:

• Local transportation.- Provided by bus or taxi cab. Some taxis are metered (recommended), others taxis are not. Make sure to negotiate the fare before boarding and if possible, have exact change available.
• Out of town transportation.- Provided by bus companies with service throughout Baja California and the rest of México. They operate out of bus depots (Central de Autobuses). You can call the Tourist Assistance Hotline 078 for more information.
